On stage, screen and... life

Posted on 4th December, 2022

Yesterday in the cold wind of Stoneham Park, Ollie Sykes and I sat on a bench to plan the afternoon's foray in the Wish ward by-election here in Hove. As we did so, a posse of Labour canvassers went by. One of them jeered, "we'll crush you!"

Which made me reflect that if one is go in insult then it should be done with wit - and, in any case, such predictions are simply to tempt fate.

As it happens, later in the day we had a a greater encounter than that: Mozart at Glyndebourne (how much the Requiem owes to the Chorus). And, later still, I saw an Armchair Theatre play with Jane Birkin, among others, called Poor Cherry. Writtem by Fay Weldon, it turns around a... by-election. Whatever happened to tannoy vans?
