Another foray in Hove, where I found that the walls inside a Hove block had been painted since I was last there. I remarked that the colour looked to me to be elephant's breath. With which the resident said that it was indeed from Farrow & Ball - "how very middle-class!" she added with a chuckle. I did not think in time to say that this was a colour invented in the Thirties by somebody in Gloucestershire, as I think I learned from a note in, of all places, Thom Gunn's Letters.
